Tuckpointing

It's common for masonry work to experience some issues as it ages.  Normal weather and a lack of maintenance can lead to problems between the bricks or stones.  Harsh weather, damage from kids using a wall for soccer or pitching practice, or an errant vehicle can cause severe damage.  Repairing the tuckpointing and any needed brick repair can restore your walls to the sound structure you remember.

The tuckpointing process in more detail:

• "Pointing" is the process that masons use to fill joints between mortar or bricks when they are newly constructing a building.  It can also refer to the spaces that occur between the bricks in a completed brick wall.
• "Repointing" is the process that masons use to remove bad mortar that's not doing its job anymore and then replacing it with new mortar that will make the structure as stable as it was when it was new.
• "Tuckpointing" is similar to repointing except the mortar usually matches the color of the brick and fillets of narrow lines of putty are put in the centers of the new mortar joints.  The fillets are usually a color that contrasts with the mortar color.  Homeowners usually appreciate the extra clean look of the tuckpointing since the extra clean lines create the illusion of brand new masonry.
